Nautical Term: Jackstaff

Definition of Jackstaff

A jackstaff is a vertical pole, typically located at the bow or stern of a ship. This pole provides a stable point for securing various lines and equipment, such as flagpoles, mooring lines, and boats’ fall lines.

For example, when a ship is underway and needs to raise a national or ensign flag, the flagstaff is hoisted up and secured to the jackstaff at the bow. This ensures that the flag is prominently displayed at the front of the ship, signaling its identity and nationality to other vessels and coastal authorities.
