Nautical Term: Toe

Definition of Toe

The ‘toe’ of a nautical term refers to the edge where the flange of an angle meets the main body. For instance, when constructing a pulley system on a ship, the ‘toe’ of each pulley’s drum would need to be aligned perfectly with the adjacent pulley’s ‘toe’, in order to ensure the seamless transfer of rope between the pulleys, and ultimately, the efficient operation of the ship’s rigging system.
