Nautical Term: LANE METER

Definition of LANE METER

A Lane Meter is a nautical method used to measure the space capacity of Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro/Ro) ships. This measurement is calculated by assigning each unit of linear space (measured in meters) on the deck of the ship, a corresponding area of 1.0 meter in length and 2.0 meters in width. This method allows for efficient measurement of the cargo capacity of Ro/Ro ships.

For example, The MS RoRo Vessel has a deck area of 20,000 square meters. Using the Lane Meter method, each Linear Meter of deck space is assigned an area of 1.0 meter in length x 2.0 meters in width. Therefore, the MS RoRo Vessel has a cargo capacity of 40,000 Linear Meters.
