Nautical Term: Lapstrake
Definition of Lapstrake
Lapstrake is a term used to describe the overlapping method of planking in boats constructed using the clinker system. In this technique, the starkes, or planks, overlap each other. The top strake always laps on the outside of the strake underneath.
For example, imagine a small wooden fishing boat, constructed using the clinker method. Each plank, or strake, overlaps the one below it, creating a watertight hull. This method, with its overlapping planks, is known as lapstrake construction.
