Nautical Term: Shifting beam
Definition of Shifting beam
A shifting beam is a type of portable support beam designed to fit into hatchway openings. Its primary function is to help secure and support hatch covers.
The shifting beam’s ends are equipped with adjustable slotted carriers. These carriers are attached to the inside of the hatchway comings, enabling the shifting beams to be easily adjusted and positioned to securely support the hatch covers.
For example, in the event of a heavy rainstorm, the crew of a ship might need to secure the hatch covers to prevent water from entering the ship’s cargo hold. In such a situation, the crew could use the shifting beams to help support and secure the hatch covers in place.
