Nautical Term: Lee shore

Definition of Lee shore

A lee shore is the land situated to the leeward, or downwind, side of a vessel. This means that the wind blows from the ship towards the land.

For instance, if a sailboat is attempting to sail from the open sea towards a shoreline, but the wind is blowing the boat towards the lee shore, this could lead to dangerous situations for the sailors on board.
