Definition of Keel
:The keel is the most fundamental structural component of a ship or boat. It is a horizontal member that runs the entire length of the vessel along its centerline. The keel serves as the backbone of the ship, providing stability and preventing the vessel from capsizing. Frames are attached to the keel, forming the primary structural support for the hull of the ship.
Example: During the construction of the ocean liner, the keel was the first structural component to be laid. The keel was carefully positioned along the centerline of the hull, ensuring that it was perfectly level. Once the position of the keel was established, the frames were attached to it using large bolts. With the frames in place, the rest of the hull could be built up around them. The ocean liner was now on its way to being a fully functional vessel capable of traversing the vast expanse of the ocean.
