Nautical Term: Lookout

Definition of Lookout

A lookout is an individual assigned to maintain a constant watch from a heightened position, such as the mast, or in the bow of the vessel. Their primary role is to observe and report any objects or potential hazards that come within their line of sight.

For example, The storm had passed, leaving the crew of the ‘Sea Star’ to navigate through the foggy waters. The first mate stationed a lookout in the bow, where he could observe the fog’s thickest patches. As the vessel approached a particularly dense area of fog, the lookout reported a large container ship directly ahead, which the crew of the ‘Sea Star’ managed to avoid colliding with, thanks to the lookout’s diligent observation and reporting.
