Nautical Term: Overcarriage

Definition of Overcarriage

Overcarriage refers to the transportation and carrying of cargo beyond the intended port or destination. For instance, if a ship is loaded with grain at Port A, but the ship’s destination is actually Port B, then the grain being transported from Port A to Port B constitutes an overcarriage. In a single paragraph, you might say, Despite the cargo of textiles being intended for Port City, the shipping company made an error and unintentionally transported the textiles cargo to another port, thereby creating an ‘overcarriage’ situation.
