Nautical Term: MEPC
Definition of MEPC
The Maritime Environment Protection Committee, commonly known as MEPC, is a sub-committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). MEPC is responsible for developing and implementing measures to prevent and reduce pollution from ships, especially those using heavy fuel oil.
For instance, during a diplomatic conference in 1973, MEPC adopted the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL). Since then, MEPC has amended MARPOL and implemented new measures, such as the requirement for ships to carry oil pollution prevention equipment, like oil water separators and oil spill response plans.
