Definition of NIS

Non-Indigenous Species (NIS), refers to plant, animal, or microbial species that are not native to a specific ecosystem. NIS can have significant impacts on native species, food webs, and ecosystem services. For instance, in a single waterbody, the introduction of NIS like zebra mussels and hydrilla can lead to a cascading effect on the ecosystem, altering nutrient cycling, and affecting recreational and commercial uses.
