Nautical Term: Panting stringer

Definition of Panting stringer

Panting stringer is a horizontal, deep-web, side structural member employed to reinforce the bow structure that is susceptible to panting loads.

For instance, in a wooden sailing ship, the bow structure may weaken under the repetitive loading caused by the ship panting against the waves. In such a situation, the panting stringer would be installed to provide additional support and reinforcement to the bow structure, thereby increasing the ship’s overall strength and stability.
