Nautical Term: Transverse planes
Definition of Transverse planes
Transverse planes refer to imaginary planes that are perpendicular to the centerline plane of a ship. These planes provide a useful reference for understanding the lateral (side-to-side) symmetry and stability of a ship. For example, in assessing the overall balance and trim of a vessel, marine engineers and surveyors often examine the data obtained from transverse sonar scans to ensure that the ship’s hull and compartments are properly shaped and proportioned, and that they are not excessively loaded or imbalanced in any way.
