Nautical Term: Pintle

Definition of Pintle

A pintle is a metal pin, secured to a rubber component, which is hooked downward into the quidgens on the stern post. This arrangement affords an axis of oscillation as the rubber is moved from side to side for steering.

For instance, on a sailing ship, the helmsman would use a tiller connected to the rudder, while the pintles secured to the rudder would allow for the necessary movement and oscillation as the ship steered through the water.
