Nautical Term: RAM
Definition of RAM
The Risk Assessment Matrix (RAM) is a nautical tool used to assess and prioritize risks associated with various marine operations. This matrix typically consists of multiple axes, each representing a specific risk factor. By plotting the potential risks on this matrix, mariners can quickly identify and prioritize the risks that pose the greatest threat to their safety and the safety of their vessel.
For example, during a cargo loading operation in rough seas, the RAM could be used to assess and prioritize the risks associated with this operation. These risks could include the risk of cargo shifting during loading, the risk of the loading crane coming into contact with the vessel’s structure during loading, and the risk of the vessel encountering larger waves or swells during the loading operation. By assessing and prioritizing these risks using the RAM, the mariners involved in this operation can take the necessary precautions to minimize the risks and ensure the safety of the vessel and its crew.
