Definition of Bulkhead

1. A vertical structural partition installed within a vessel to divide its interior into multiple compartments for both strength and safety reasons. This type of bulkhead is often referred to as a strength bulkhead.
2. A term used to describe the vertical partition walls installed in a vessel’s interior, which serve only to subdivide the interior space into various compartments. Unlike strength bulkheads, these non-structural bulkheads do not contribute significantly to the overall structural strength of the vessel.
