Definition of Stern
The stern part of a vessel refers to its rear end or the aftermost section of the boat. This term is important in navigation, as the rudder is attached to the stern, allowing the helmsman to steer the vessel.
Example: During a regatta race, the helmsman of a sailboat needed to make a quick turn to avoid colliding with another boat. By pulling the tiller towards himself, the helmsman turned the rudder, which in turn changed the direction of the sailboat’s stern. The boat executed the turn successfully, avoiding a costly collision.
