Nautical Term: VLOC

Definition of VLOC

A Very Large Ore Carrier (VLOC) is a type of ocean-going vessel specifically designed for transporting large volumes of bulk cargo, such as iron ore, coal, and grain. VLOCs typically have deadweight tonnage of over 150,000 tons and can carry up to 400,000 tons of cargo. Here’s an example of how VLOCs are used in cargo transportation:

The iron ore mining company, Gina Resources, signed a long-term charter agreement with the shipping company, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, for the operation of a VLOC. Under the agreement, the VLOC would transport iron ore from Gina Resources’ mining facilities in Western Australia to ports in China. The VLOC’s large cargo capacity and long range capabilities enable it to make round trips between the two countries without the need for refueling or transshipment of cargo.
