Definition of Scupper pipe
A scupper pipe is a drainage system that consists of a pipe connected to the scupper, which is an opening on the decks for water to drain out. The pipe has an outlet through the side plating just above the water level. This water diversion system is designed to prevent water from accumulating on the decks, discoloring the ship’s side plating, or damaging the paint.
For instance, imagine a sailboat that is cruising in rough seas. The deck is getting pounded by the waves, and water is starting to accumulate on the decks. To prevent this from causing any damage to the ship, the crew can activate the scupper pipe system. This will allow the excess water to drain out of the scuppers and away from the deck, thus preventing any potential damage to the ship’s side plating or paint.
