Definition of Shaft strut

A shaft strut, also known as a brachet, is a supporting structure in twin or multiple screwed vessels. Specifically, it supports the after end of the propeller shaft and the propeller. This design is utilized in vessels where the propeller shafts are fitted off from the center line.

Example usage: During the voyage, the chief engineer noticed unusual vibrations coming from the starboard engine room. After conducting a thorough inspection, he identified the source of the problem: a cracked shaft strut on the after end of the starboard propeller shaft.
