Nautical Term: Eye bolt

Definition of Eye bolt

An eye bolt is a type of bolt used in maritime applications. It comes in two forms: the first has a head looped and worked to form an eye; the second type has a solid head with a hole drilled through it, creating a shackle eye. The use of an eye bolt is similar to that of a pad eye.

For instance, in a sailing vessel, an eye bolt might be used to secure a safety line to a stanchion. The working eye of the eye bolt would be shackled to the safety line, allowing the line to be easily attached and detached from the eye bolt as needed.
