Nautical Term: Slop chute
Definition of Slop chute
A slop chute is a long, flexible pipe or tube used on board ships to dispose of wastewater and other liquids, such as cleaning solutions or slop water, which cannot be stored in the ship’s tanks. The slop chute is typically connected to a slop tank or sumps and leads to a point over the side of the ship where the wastewater and other liquids can be safely discharged overboard.
For example, During the cleaning of the cargo hold, the crew used a lot of cleaning solutions and water. In order to dispose of this wastewater, the crew connected the slop chute to the slop tank and opened the overboard valve at the end of the slop chute. The wastewater was then safely discharged overboard, allowing the crew to continue their cleaning tasks without the need to store the wastewater in the ship’s tanks.
