Nautical Term: Stem
Definition of Stem
The stem refers to the vertical structural component of a ship’s bow. This part is responsible for supporting the weight of the bow and transmitting the forces generated during navigation to the keel. For instance, when a wave hits the bow, the force is transferred to the stem, which then distributes it to the keel. This redistribution of forces enables the ship to maintain its stability and navigate efficiently.
