Definition of Stern door

A stern door is a watertight, horizontally-hinged door that is an integral part of the transom on a stern-loading Ro-Ro (Roll-on Roll-off) vessel. For instance, when loading cargo such as vehicles onto a Ro-Ro vessel, the stern door is opened to allow the cargo to roll on and be secured inside the vessel.
