Nautical Term: Stiffener

Definition of Stiffener

A stiffener is a reinforcing member, typically an angle bar or stringer, which is fastened to a surface to enhance its structural integrity and make it more rigid. For instance, in the construction of a wooden boat, stiffeners may be added to the inside of the hull to reinforce it against the outward pressure of the water.
