Nautical Term: STS

Definition of STS

Ship to Ship (STS) is a nautical term used to describe the transfer of cargo or other materials between two ships at sea. This operation requires careful planning, communication, and coordination between the two vessels and their crews.

For example, imagine a container ship and a tanker operating in the same area of the Atlantic Ocean. The container ship has reached the end of its cargo journey and needs to unload its containers. Meanwhile, the tanker is on its way to deliver a cargo of crude oil.

To facilitate an efficient transfer of cargo between the two ships, the container ship and the tanker agree to conduct a Ship to Ship transfer operation. The two ships coordinate their positions and speeds, and establish clear communication channels to ensure a smooth and safe transfer of cargo between them. Once the transfer is complete, the container ship sails away to its next destination, while the tanker continues on its journey to deliver its cargo of crude oil to its final destination.
