Definition of Scuppers
Scuppers are openings in the sides of a ship. These openings serve the purpose of allowing water to flow out of the ship. This water can come from the waterways the ship is navigating through, or from the drains on the ship itself.
For example, imagine a cargo ship is traveling through rough waters. The waves are causing the ship to take on a significant amount of water. To prevent the ship from sinking, the crew must act quickly. They open the scuppers to allow the excess water to flow out of the ship, preventing it from sinking.
