Nautical Term: Swash bulkhead
Definition of Swash bulkhead
A swash bulkhead refers to a semi-partitioned bulkhead, designed to function similarly to a swash plate. This bulkhead is partial in nature, but its main purpose remains the same as that of a swash plate: to deflect or redirect water flow, enhancing the overall stability and seaworthiness of a ship or boat.
For instance, in a large cruise ship, the engine room is situated in the lower hull of the ship. To protect the engine room from potential water ingress due to wave impact, a swash bulkhead is installed in the engine room’s lower boundary. This swash bulkhead deflects the incoming waves, effectively preventing water from entering the engine room and causing potential damage to the ship’s critical systems.
