Nautical Term: Tackle

Definition of Tackle

Nautical tackle refers to a collection of ropes and blocks used to transmit and amplify force. A simple rope with no blocks attached is not considered tackle since it fails to increase the applied force. However, when multiple ropes are connected with blocks, the result is an intricate system of tackle, which effectively multiplies the power transferred through the ropes.

For instance, imagine a sailor on a sailing ship who wishes to change the direction of the wind to steer the ship toward a desirable location. In this situation, the sailor would hoist a sail called the jib, which would be attached to the forestay (a thick rope used to support the mast and sails) via a jib halyard. The jib halyard would be passed through a block and tackle system, consisting of several interconnected ropes and blocks, which would be used to hoist the jib sail higher into the wind. As a result of this complex system of tackle, the sailor would be able to harness the power of the wind more effectively, thereby allowing the sailing ship to change direction and sail toward its desired location more efficiently.
