A triangular-shaped steel plate, used to enhance the bond between the towing bridle and the towing hawser. This plate is commonly referred to as a ‘fish plate’.’

During a storm at sea, the crew of a cargo ship had to tow another vessel in distress. The towline, however, kept snapping under the strain. The captain then ordered the crew to attach a fish plate between the towing bridle and the towline. This additional strength from the fish plate allowed the towline to withstand the immense strain, and the second vessel was safely towed to port.
