Nautical Term: Towage

Definition of Towage

Towage refers to the services provided by tugs to assist a ship or other vessels in ports. These charges cover the costs of the tug’s crew, fuel, and other expenses incurred during the towage operation.

For example, during a busy shipping season, a large container ship may experience engine trouble while entering the port. In this situation, a tugboat with an experienced crew would be called upon to provide towage services to the container ship. The charges for these services would fall under the category of towage.
