Nautical Term: Ullage opening
Definition of Ullage opening
An ullage opening is a compact, enclosed aperture situated at the summit of a cargo tank. Its primary function is to facilitate the taking of precise measurements to ascertain the extent of the liquid occupying the tank.
For instance, during the loading process of a cargo ship, the crew needs to keep track of the amount of liquid being loaded into each tank. To accomplish this, they use an ullage opening to make accurate measurements of the liquid level in the tank. This information is then recorded and used to optimize the loading process and ensure that the cargo ship is carrying the maximum permitted weight of cargo.
