Definition of Undermanned

Undermanned refers to a ship or a vessel having an insufficient number of crew members to safely and efficiently operate the vessel.

For instance, imagine a cargo ship with a crew complement of twenty. However, due to unexpected illnesses and injuries, the ship is left with only twelve able-bodied crew members. The ship is now considered undermanned and the captain must take immediate measures to ensure the safety and efficient operation of the vessel.
