Nautical Term: Up anchor

Definition of Up anchor

Up anchor refers to the process of hoisting or hauling in the anchor. This action is taken when the boat is ready to sail or leave a mooring.

For instance, imagine a sailor who has spent the night at anchor in a small cove. In the morning, the sailor decides to set sail for the next destination. To do this, the sailor must first up anchor. This would involve either using a windlass to pull in the chain and anchor, or manually hauling in the anchor using ropes and pulleys. Once the anchor is successfully hauled in, the sailor can set sail for their next destination.
