Nautical Term: UU

Definition of UU

Unless Used (UU) is a nautical term used to indicate that certain equipment or navigation markers are not in use under normal circumstances. For instance, a buoy marked with the UU symbol indicates that it is not currently in use as a navigation aid.

During a long-distance sailing race, the competing vessels were required to navigate through a series of buoys. Each buoy was marked with either a green or red symbol, indicating the direction that vessels should navigate around the buoy. One buoy, however, was marked with the UU symbol. The sailors were informed that this buoy was currently out of service due to maintenance works being carried. The sailors were advised to navigate around the buoy as if it were in use, taking care to maintain a safe distance from the buoy to avoid any potential collisions.
