Nautical Term: Oxter plate
Definition of Oxter plate
An Oxter plate is a specific type of plate that is designed to fit into the curved area where the shell plating meets the top of the stern post. This plate is then secured in place with fastenings for added stability.
For example, during the repair and maintenance of a ship’s stern, the presence of an oxter plate becomes essential. The plate is first removed, and the old fastenings are replaced with new ones. The oxter plate is then replaced, and the new fastenings are tightened to secure the plate in place.
