Nautical Term: Watertight

Definition of Watertight

Watertight refers to a state where a vessel or other watercraft is capable of keeping water out, even when there is a significant head of water that could potentially occur in both the intact and damaged conditions.

For example, during a storm at sea, the waves may crash against the hull of a ship, causing a considerable head of water. In this situation, a watertight vessel would be able to keep the water out, ensuring the safety and integrity of the ship and its crew.
