Nautical Term: Added mass

Definition of Added mass

Added mass refers to the effective increase in mass of a hull as it moves through water. This increase in mass is due to the water that is entrained and set in motion with the hull. For instance, in a design analysis, added mass could be accounted for in calculating the required power output of a ship’s engines.
