Nautical Term: Jettison

Definition of Jettison

Jettison is the act of deliberately discarding or throwing items overboard from a ship or vessel. This is typically done to reduce the weight of the ship in order to gain more speed, improve maneuverability, or increase the safety of the ship and its crew.

For example, during a storm at sea, the captain of a cargo ship may decide to jettison some of the cargo in order to reduce the weight of the ship and improve its ability to ride out the storm.
