Nautical Term: Aft peak tank

Definition of Aft peak tank

An aft peak tank refers to a tank or compartment situated aft of the last watertight transverse bulkhead, which is positioned above the propellers and rudder. This tank is commonly used for storing fresh water or seawater for ballast purposes. For instance, in a cargo ship, the aft peak tank may be filled with seawater during loading to maintain the ship’s stability. Later, once the cargo has been discharged, the aft peak tank may be emptied and filled with fresh water for use during the ship’s voyage.
