Definition of Gaskets
Gaskets refer to sealing materials that create an airtight or watertight seal in various places. These places may include doors, hatches, steam cylinders, manhole covers, valves, or the spaces between the flanges of pipes.
Gaskets can be made from various materials such as rubber, canvas, asbestos, paper, sheet lead and copper, soft iron, and commercial products.
For instance, let us consider a steam engine used in a power plant. The steam engine requires a tight seal between the cylinder head and the cylinder body. This seal is achieved by using a gasket made of a suitable material such as asbestos or copper.
Therefore, gaskets serve a vital role in ensuring the proper functioning of various machinery and equipment by providing an airtight or watertight seal in the required places.
