Definition of Deadlifht
A horizontal board or grating, typically made of wood or metal, that is placed over the opening of a cabin window during stormy weather. This protective covering, known as a ‘deadlight,’ prevents the waves from directly hitting the glass, thereby reducing the risk of damage to the window and the cabin interior.
For instance, During a violent storm at sea, the captain ordered the crew to secure all hatches and windows. Among the precautions taken, the crew placed deadlights over the cabin windows to protect the glass from the relentless waves.
