Nautical Term: Alongside

Definition of Alongside

When a vessel is safely moored next to a dock or berth in a port, it is said to be in the position ‘alongside’. This term refers to the vessel’s proximity to the shore or other vessels in the port.

For example: The cargo ship, ‘Sea Treasure’, arrived at the port and maneuvered alongside the dock where the crew secured the vessel using mooring ropes. The ship’s captain reported to the port authorities that the ‘Sea Treasure’ was safely alongside and ready to unload its cargo.
