Nautical Term: Deadweight

Definition of Deadweight

Deadweight refers to the maximum additional weight a ship can carry when at her designed full-load draft. This weight includes cargo, fuel, water, stores, passengers, and crew, as well as their effects.

For instance, imagine a cargo ship with a designed full-load draft. The ship’s deadweight capacity might be 15,000 metric tons. This means the ship can carry an additional 15,000 metric tons of cargo, fuel, water, stores, passengers, and crew, when at her designed full-load draft.
