Nautical Term: SPM
Definition of SPM
Single Point Mooring (SPM) refers to a mooring system designed to secure a vessel at a specific location in the sea. This mooring system consists of a single buoy or float connected to the seabed through a series of anchors and chains. The vessel’s ropes or hoses are connected to the buoy, allowing the vessel to be secured in place. For example, an offshore oil production platform may be secured to the seabed using a Single Point Mooring system. This allows the production platform to remain stationary in the ocean while it extracts and processes oil from under the seabed.
