Nautical Term: Appendages
Definition of Appendages
Appendages refer to the smaller components of a vessel that extend beyond its primary outline. These features, as depicted in cross-sections and water-sections, include the keel below its shell line, the rolling keel or fin, the rudder, rudder post, screw, bilge keel, struts, bossing, and skeg. For example, a sailing yacht may have an appendage in the form of a bulbous bow, which increases the vessel’s efficiency by reducing drag and improving the flow of water around the boat.
