Nautical Term: Lay aloft

Definition of Lay aloft

Lay aloft refers to the act of raising a sail or other equipment above the deck of a ship. This order is typically given to crew members who will be responsible for hoisting the sail or other equipment.

For example, if a captain sees that the wind is shifting, he may give the order to lay aloft the foretopmast sail. The crew members responsible for this task would then go aloft to hoist the sail and adjust it to catch the new direction of the wind.
