Nautical Term: Main beam
Definition of Main beam
Main beam’ refers to the primary longitudinal beam on a ship. This beam runs along the centerline of the vessel and provides significant support, typically through the use of king posts. In some instances, there may be two main beams, one on each side of the centerline.’
For example, consider the following paragraph from a shipbuilding manual:
‘The keel of the new tanker has been laid, marking an important milestone in the construction process. The keel serves as the foundation for the entire ship, and it is upon this keel that the main beam will be erected. The main beam will provide the primary support for the ship’s superstructure, and it is through the use of the main beam that the ship will take shape.’
(Note: This paragraph is for illustrative purposes only and is not intended to be a part of any actual shipbuilding manual.)
