Nautical Term: Athwart

Definition of Athwart

Athwart refers to a direction that is across the ship’s beam, or width. This term is often used to describe the position or motion of an object that is situated athwart the ship’s beam.

For example, if a large crate is being loaded onto a ship, and the crate is positioned so that it extends across the ship’s beam, then we could say that the crate is being loaded athwart the ship’s beam.
