Nautical Term: EDIFACT

Definition of EDIFACT

EDIFACT, or Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce, and Trade, is a set of international data interchange standards sponsored by the United Nations. These standards enable organizations to exchange business documents electronically, irrespective of the geographical location or the technological infrastructure of the trading partners.

For instance, consider a global automotive manufacturer that wants to place an order for car parts with multiple suppliers located in different parts of the world. By implementing EDIFACT, both the automotive manufacturer and the car part suppliers can exchange business documents electronically, enabling them to place orders, confirm receipt of goods, and process invoices in a seamless and efficient manner, irrespective of the geographical location or the technological infrastructure of the trading partners.
